Where did Talking Couch come from?

Find out what drove the creation of Talking Couch - a service to make mental health services easily available to all!

Gavin Donald - Founder.

Having suffered my own health issues for over 2 decades that included inexplicable aching muscles, a thick foggy head through which I struggled to think and a severe inability to sleep; I built the tracking system to monitor my own behaviours to see if I could find a solution.

Strangely, collecting data about my health did not make me an expert in data interpretation. It was then that I realised that many people will be struggling to make sense of their symptoms and I decided to combine behavioural tracking with the help and support that a professional can provide.

How we can help you

Through our online video counselling service, you can find the counsellor that is right for you:

  • You can switch counsellors until you find one that you connect with;
  • We make it easy for you book a session;
  • You can then enter information about your week in our purpose built behavioural tracking system which your counsellor can see;
  • You then talk  to your counsellor through our secure online video link and work through your problems.

Why we want to increase access to mental health support

My experience in the support available for those with mental health issues is the driver for the creation of this site. The tracking system allows you to share your experiences with a professional counsellor so that you don’t need to spend years reading and experimenting as I did.

Nobody should be left on their own to go through such difficult experiences. The stigma and attitude to those with mental health issues makes their day-to-day lives far more difficult. I think it is the next battlefield on from racism and homophobia. I hope that one day we will understand the needs of those who need just a little more support.

Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Buzz Aldrin, Adam Ant, Toyah Wilcox, Beethoven, Marlon Brando, Jim Carey, Charles Dickens and Ernest Hemmingway were all productive members of society. All of them suffered from mental health issues at some point during their lives. People with mental health issues are not worthless, they are just different.
